University Establishes Jack Calhoun Memorial Scholarship

PBA News

Palm ϳԹ Atlantic has established the Jack Calhoun Memorial Scholarship for students from Mexico and Latin America.

The scholarship honors the late Dr. John “Jack” H. Calhoun, who taught political science at the University for more than 35 years. Calhoun was an avid traveler, exploring the world and going on several mission trips, with destinations such as Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Russia, Canada and Great Britain.

Dr. Tom St. Antoine ’93, one of Calhoun’s former students and colleagues, said he was at his best in the classroom with students.

“His passionate but good-natured political debates were the stuff of PBA legend,” said St. Antoine, director of the Frederick M. Supper Honors Program. “When I was a young faculty member at PBA, it meant so much to me to have the friendship of one of my former professors who welcomed me and modeled daily the pursuit of a call to Christian higher education.”

The scholarship in Calhoun’s name will recognize students from Mexico or Latin America for an outstanding display of academic achievement and community service. Generations of his former students are now serving all over the world, and he took joy in seeing all they accomplished.

Calhoun had a strong faith and was a devoted church-goer throughout his life. Most recently, he sang in the choir at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Wellington, Florida. He was a devoted Sailfish Athletics fan and, for a time, was the voice of athletics. A native of Philadelphia, Calhoun was also a passionate fan of the Eagles, Phillies and the University of Pittsburgh.

Calhoun died peacefully on Aug. 26, according to his obituary. He is survived by his wife, Celia; children Johnny, Linda and Steve; and grandchildren Logan, Brady and Madelyn. His memorial and celebration of life are delayed until coronavirus restrictions are lifted.
